Due to a letter from my good friends at BMI, I no longer feature music on this site that contains melodies that are copywritten. If you hear a melody, I wrote it. Anything else you hear is strictly improvised music over common forms. Please select sound icon to hear compositions.

Dickie Thompson Trio - Undecided - Recorded live at our old steady gig at Plush in Tucson, sometime in 2005. Dickie Thompson on guitar, Gil Rodriguez on drums, and me playing 6 string bass with the pseudo-Hammond B3 treatment.
The Dickie Thompson Trio- Win, Lose or Draw - A funky soul-jazz number that Dickie use to love to play. I think he figured that the kids liked that rock and roll stuff.
Samba De Sequim - Here's an original tune, written while thinking about Sequim, WA. I was reading about how it's sunnier up there than the rest of the Olympic Peninsula due to the rain shadow effect of Mount Olympia. It IS sunny up there, but the vision for this tune didn't include all the retiree trailer parks I saw there. All overdubs of multiple basses, one day I'll put real drums on this.
Hopeful - A solo track I recorded on my Goldtone ABG for a documentary film soundtrack.
2 May Tow - Another solo piece of mine on the Goldtone ABG from another film soundtrack. Haunting, melancholy, poignant, bittersweet, you know... that sort of thing.
Solo Looping Track - Here's a funky track recorded live at one of my solo looping shows. I used a Carvin BB70 bass, Boss VF-1 effects, and a Zoom drum machine through a Boss RC20 Loopstation.
Sparkle - In the mid-90's I got very into the midi thing. Not being a keyboard player, it was a fairly time consuming process, but I had fun. This is one of my more ambitious projects from that time, it may sound a bit dated now—the synths I used are long on the digital scrap heap, but it's a cool track. It's a smooth-jazz-ish type thing. I programmed every freakin' beat of the drum part - this was before you young whippersnappers had pre-recorded drum loops. Check out my shredding Lukather-inspired synth-guitar solo, and fake Miles Davis impersonation - enjoy.
Farther Up - A track from my Blues Bass book. Ralph Gilmore on drums, I'm playing bass and all the guitars. I did guitar tracks with the Line 6 Variax, and I think it did an amazing job of copping the hollow body jazz box tone.
Piccolo Bass Quartet - My piccolo bass quartet from Tucson with Fred Hayes on drums, Greg Armstrong on sax, myself on acoustic bass and overdubbed on the piccolo bass. Here's a great old Wes Montgomery tribute.
Like John - This was a piece I wrote for a soundtrack on the Goldtone ABG. The filmmaker wanted something that sounded like a solo acoustic piece by John McGlaughlin... hence the imaginative title.
My Lil Darling - This was recorded live at Plush in Tucson - one of my solo looping gigs. I laid down the rhythm track with a 5 string bass through a Leslie patch, along with a drum machine. Then I played over the top with my piccolo bass.
Gaudi - Here's a killer track written by the extremely talented Brad Hatfield, a keyboard player from Boston I had the pleasure of working with many years ago. He's been doing a lot of writing for film and tv, but has a big jazz background. This track features lots of great musicians, Brad on keys, Jim Gwin on drums, Dave Mann on alto, Dave Finucane on bass clarinet, Ben Wittman on percussion. The files are hosted on Brad's site, so copy and paste this url into your browser!

3 Way Street - Another Hatfield composition, 3 Way Street is a triptych... that's three parts y'all! This tune is a long journey, pretty awesome stuff, check it out.

Sweet Georgia (slap) - A solo on my gut stringed upright bass, taken from a T Jarrod Bonta Quartet gig at Flipnotics. I'm still pretty new at the slap upright technique, this solo is not too bad. It's pretty tame by most standards, but I strive for tone.
All Of Me - A solo on my gut stringed upright bass, taken from a T Jarrod Bonta Quartet gig at Flipnotics.
Awl Blues - By request, I'm putting up some upright solos on my carved Juzek bass with steel strings (Thomastik Superflexibles at that point in time). This was recorded in Tucson with the Larry Redhouse Trio, sometime in 2005 (I think). Drummer Gil Rodriguez recorded this live to DAT with a couple of mics in front of the band. Sounds pretty good!
